Welcome to my home page.

research

I study the earth's water and carbon cycles, particularly the effects of global warming and other human impacts.

Recent projects include: (1) Work with NYCDEP, funded by NASA's Applied Sciences Program, to understand the water budget of the watersheds that supply water to New York City in order to improve ability to predict supplies in droughts and under climate change; (2) Climate hazard mapping and pilot adaptation strategies for livestock smallholders in the Gandaki River Basin, Nepal, funded by the USAID Climate-Livestock CRSP; (3) Improving seasonal forecasts of temperature and precipitation through dynamic modeling and application of information theory, funded by NOAA's Climate Program Office under the Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) Program.

I work on NOAA-CREST activities of monitoring water resources, droughts and floods from earth-observing satellites. I work with colleagues at NASA-GISS to better understand the impact of plants, soil moisture, and groundwater on weather and climate.

With Dr. Jesse C. Krakauer, I also developed a Body Shape Index to study how body measurements relate to health and longevity.

If you're a current or prospective CUNY student interested in pursuing a research project with me, please e-mail me at the address above.

I am organizing a conference on climate and development in South Asia (12-14 January 2015, Kathmandu). See here for details and to register.

My Caltech Ph.D. work focused on (1) the distribution of gas (primarily carbon dioxide) molecules and isotopes that results from mixing in the atmosphere and ocean and (2) the effect of climate change on forests and ocean circulation. (View my dissertation.) As a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow from 2006-2008 with Inez Fung in Berkeley, I worked in the Keck Hydrowatch Project, which is testing sensor networks that promise to provide new insights into forest water flow.

I'm a member of the ASCE Committee on Adaptation to Climate Change and the NOAA MAPP Climate Prediction Task Force. I'm an editor for the Central European Journal of Geosciences and for ISRN.
